Good News for Masham Primary School

Chairperson Paul Baker announced today ” We are really thrilled that we have been able to get together with Masham Primary School and to provide our tennis courts free of charge for the use of their pupils during the summer term to introduce them to the game of tennis. Terry Marshall, whose grandson Alfie attends the school, instigated the idea and his endeavour got us this far. If it proves to be a success then we will look at widening the scheme to include other local schools.”

Headteacher, Mrs Davies, said “This is a fantastic opportunity for the children and we will be very happy to make use of the courts.”

Paul Baker added ”The tennis club forms part of Masham Sports Association and it is exciting to see its remit to bring sport to the community being strengthened in this way. Combined with the club’s subsidised coaching with a professional coach which begins 6th May this promises to be a great introduction to the game.”

The courts will be reserved for the school between 1pm and 2pm on Tuesdays: 3 May, 10 May, 17 May, 24 May, 7 June, 14 June.

Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Association Outstanding Service Award presented to ‘Masham’s Mr Tennis’ – Basil Sturdy

At the December 2010 Annual General Meeting of the Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Association, held at the Holiday Inn Garforth, Basil Sturdy of Mashamshire Tennis Club was presented with a beautifully engraved glass trophy to commemorate an exceptional YLTA County Award for ‘Outstanding Service as a Volunteer and Tennis Administrator’.

Presenting the trophy, Liz Wilson, President of the YLTA,  recounted how Basil joined Mashamshire Tennis Club as a young lad of 14 and is still very active now at the age of 73, playing weekly at the social tennis sessions which he organised for several decades.

In Masham, Basil Sturdy’s name is synonymous with tennis and over the years he has contributed thousands of hours supporting tennis in Masham – as a committee member, player, fundraiser,  and general volunteer for anything and everything.

Mrs Wilson said “Very soon Basil will have served tennis in Masham and in Yorkshire for 60 years. He has never sought the limelight. Indeed he has always been very modest about his contribution. This is a very proud moment for Basil and the Yorkshire LTA is delighted to honour his outstanding contribution with this glass trophy.”

Mashamshire Tennis’s President, Elsie Taylor, who attended the event commented “I am so proud for Basil and for this wonderful club.”

Simon – a member of the club and of course the designer of our website – is an extremely thrilled and proud new dad. He is playing a very active role in looking after Lena and participated at the birth. Simon even cut the umbilical cord!

Lena however is making her presence heard and there have been many sleepless nights already!!

Mashamshire Team takes first points in Friendly League!

Our intrepid team of Tom and Jamie Johnson, Kathryn Carter and Eleanor Baker managed to take all the points against opponents Richmond.

Although not much tennis was played it was a lovely sunny evening and it was hard to resist an impromptu celebratory picnic. Spectators Norma Johnson and Paul Baker shared the euphoria with the team (as well as the sumptuous spread!) and an excellent evening was had by all.

Asked what the team and the club will have learnt from this experience, Paul Baker replied ‘You will always win if the opposition literally fails to turn up!’

He tried to quickly hop it but Terry managed to get him in a weblock. Meanwhile Paul Baker chased his mates – Badger wearing his Newcastle United shirt and squeaky clean Ratty.

Mr Toad admitted to breaking in through the fence and pleaded for the police to be kept out of it due to past misdemeanours involving a car.

Mashamshire Tennis Club reaches Mens Doubles semi finals..

Father and son, Tom & Jamie Johnson, entered the 2010 Harrogate & District Tournament in the Mens Doubles and Jamie also entered the Mens Singles.

In the Doubles, Tom & Jamie did extremely well beating several teams to reach the Tournament semi finals. Unfortunately they couldn’t progress any further but organisers Ian Hargreaves and Oliver Scaife were pleased to see Mashamshire Tennis Club represented and back in competitions.

In the Singles, Jamie came across some really strong opposition and did extremely well to get as far as the second round.

Well done to Tom and Jamie who are looking forward to the 2011 Harrogate & District Tournament!

Thank you for supporting your local tennis club
